10 Engrossing Documentaries on Netflix
I, like thousands of others across the country, have been in quarantine mode the last few months. Working from home has not been that bad (for me), as it has allowed me to actually utilize my Netflix account! The following are all documentaries/specials that I have watched. While some subjects are light-hearted, there are a few that will cause you to conduct research and learn. I highly encourage others to check these out.

1. Trigger Warning with Killer Mike (2019)

2. Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool (2019)
“An exploration of the musician’s archival photos and home movies.”
3. Remastered: The Two Killings of Sam Cooke (2019)
“The Two Killings of Sam Cooke”, is a 2019 documentary film about Sam Cooke, the artist and activist, and the circumstances and controversy surrounding his murder.”
4. They’ve Gotta Have Us (2018)
“The rise of Black actors as they have gone from being the backdrop to calling the shots. This is the inside story of the turning points of black life on both sides of the lens, from Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte, to the present day.”
5. Who Killed Malcolm X? (2020)
“In February 1965, Malcolm X is murdered; three men are arrested, but only one admits to being part of the plot; decades later, one activist pledges to find the real killers, and vows to learn the truth about what officials knew regarding the crime.”
6. She Did That. (2019)

7. The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson (2017)
“Dubbed “the Rosa Parks of the LGBT movement,” trans icon Marsha P. Johnson was a New York City fixture whose life was cut tragically short in 1992 when her body was discovered in the Hudson River.”
8. Hip-Hop Evolution (2016)
This Canadian music documentary series is hosted by Juno Award-winning artist, Shad. This documentary series profiles the history of hip-hop music through interviews with many of the genre’s leading cultural figures.
9. What Happened, Miss Simone? (2015)
This Netflix original utilizes recently found audiotapes that span over the course of three decades. Nina tells her life story to various interviewers and journalists.
10. The Story of Us with Morgan Freeman (2017)
Morgan Freeman explores the meaning of life, God, and many big questions in between in an effort to understand how religion has evolved and shaped society.
