Gregg Leakes (66), Husband of NeNe Leakes, Dies of Cancer

Gregg Leakes, the husband of NeNe Leakes, has died of cancer. Gregg, who appeared alongside his wife on “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in May 2018.

“Today, the Leakes family is in deep pain with a broken heart. After a long battle with cancer, Gregg Leakes has passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by all of his children, very close loved ones and wife NeNe Leakes,” the family said in a press release. “We ask that you pray for peace and strength over their family & allow them to mourn in private during this very very difficult time.”

NeNe, 53, revealed over the weekend that Gregg was in the process of “transitioning to the other side.” She made the announcement at her Atlanta lounge, The Linnethia, after some customers called her rude for not acknowledging a birthday in the crowd.

“My husband is transitioning to the other side,” she told the room before turning to acknowledge those who called her out.

“You don’t know what we’re dealing with right now. We walked in this lounge because we had to walk in this lounge because this is our business. So, when people approach and say, ‘You’re rude because you don’t want to say happy birthday,’ my husband is at home dying. I don’t want to say ‘Happy birthday,’ okay?”

In 2019, NeNe stated her husband was cancer-free after undergoing chemotherapy for six months. It wasn’t until June 2021 that NeNe announced that Gregg’s cancer had returned.

“I’d love everybody to pray for Gregg. That would be beautiful: Pray for his strength,” she said during a video interview with The Jasmine Brand. “And pray for me, too.”

NeNe and Gregg first married in 1999 and divorced 12 years later after Season 4 of RHOA finished shooting. They remarried on June 22, 2013, in a filmed ceremony for Bravo’s spin-off “I Dream of NeNe: The Wedding.”

The couple appeared on Bravo’s RHOA from 2008 to 2019, with NeNe leaving the show in 2020. Gregg’s battle with colon cancer was documented during his 11th season in 2018-2019.
